Kountry Kitchen from across the country

I was only gone from Indy for 6 months but I can tell you Kountry Kitchen was in my top 3, home sick, comfort food cravings. There is a reason this place has been a corner stone of the black community for so long. I can remember driving past The Kitchen for years and admiring all the polished cars and ladies in their Sunday best and saying to myself "Any place that is this packed on a regular basis must be some place special". That is exactly what it is. Some place special. Baby Face, Barack Obama and everyone in between have enjoyed the simple yet satisfying fare offered at The Kitchen.

On this trip I ordered the Baked Chicken quarter with macaroni and cheese and yams as my sides with a home made lemonade served appropriately in a mason jar.

The Chicken was all white meat, juicy and falling from the bone onto my plate which made my job much easier. The macaroni and yams were reminiscent of a summer BBQ at your grandmothers house. The lemonade is a whole other story. Home made with fresh lemon squeezed right into that mason jar. The first sip always causes my face to pucker up in joy as a result of the 6 grams of sugar and the load of pulp that just filled my mouth.

The service is nothing more or less than one would expect. The waitress had no problem shouting "ya'll need anything" from 15 feet away as she breezes through the room. I have always enjoyed the quiet yet gracious mannerisms of the staff here and was just as pleased on this visit as any from my past.

With it's quaint and mismatched decor, wall of fame or the 10" television in the corner blaring the news for all to hear, this place is, at the very least comfortable. If not homey. Be prepared for a full blown food coma.
